Student Matthew studied and HNC and HND in Electrical & Electronic Engineering and is now working as an Electrical Design Engineer in the nuclear Industry.
Here is his story:
I was doing some online research into different distance learning courses and came across the UniCourse website. I requested further course information from multiple course providers and while some simply sent out a pack, the UniCourse staff were really friendly and helpful, offering advice and further information which gave a really good first impression of what the company would be like.
Prior to joining UniCourse, I was working full time as an electrical installation contractor. I’d completed my apprenticeship years prior and I had hit a point in my career where it felt difficult for me to progress without completing further qualifications. As a contractor, taking day release to go to college isn’t always an option, so distance learning seemed like the best route for me.
The tutors were brilliant. I was really surprised with the amount of time they were able to give in 1 to 1 calls, ensuring that I understood the assignments and had all the information I needed. They were really friendly, and always very responsive to emails when I had small queries that wouldn’t require a tutoring call.
The overall level of support available. There are so many resources on the UniCourse website to aid your studies, and the tutors have extensive availability, some even out of usual working hours.
Its completely changed my outlook and boosted my confidence with education. Whereas applying for university to do a degree full time for 3 years is a huge commitment and potentially means leaving work etc, UniCourse provides a pathway into higher education in manageable and affordable amounts, that can be completed along side work. Since completing my HNC/HND with UniCourse, I have secured a job as an electrical design engineer in the nuclear industry, and my company are now sponsoring me through the final year of my degree.
The flexibility of the courses was brilliant. There were many times where other commitments with work meant that I had less time to study and this wasn’t an issue. As long as I had submitted a full unit before the academic year had ended, everything really was at a pace to suit me.
UniCourse is perfect for anyone who has the baseline qualifications such as A-levels or NVQ who feel as though they have hit a ceiling with their education opportunities but would like to continue progressing. I think particularly for site workers/contractors who need the flexibility due to different commitments with work, this is a perfect route to progression that can be managed around other aspects of their life.
I would definitely recommend UniCourse to anybody who is unsure. Achieving my HNC and HND has opened so many doors for me career wise and allowed me to progress into a job which is much more flexible and provides great opportunities for the future.
I spent a few years asking various employers to sponsor me through day release at college to complete these qualifications. Unfortunately, due to the nature of contracting and the uncertainty of future projects, employers don’t like committing to providing multi-year qualifications, so I only wish I’d have found out how accessible distance learning options such as UniCourse were earlier.
